Autodesk Gives Media First Look at AutoCAD 2012 for Mac |

I would think it would be frustrating to not be able to use your computer of choice, whether it be a Mac or PC, for personal use and especially work. Apparently Autodesk agrees and is giving their customers what they have been asking for: AutoCAD 2012 for Mac. Today, Autodesk announced AutoCAD 2012 for Mac, AutoCAD LT 2012 for Mac and AutoCAD WS for Mac software, built for the OS X Lion. Last week they briefed the media on what to expect and held a Facecast for the public earlier today.
In last week’s webcast Amy Bunszel, vice president, AutoCAD products, Autodesk, said that AutoCAD for Mac had been “hugely” requested by customers. In fact, now design firms can have a variety of Mac and PC users that can work together on AutoCAD 2012 files. Rob Maguire, senior product manager, AutoCAD, Autodesk, and Iris Shoor, senior product manager, AutoCAD WS, Autodesk joined Bunszel to fill us in on all the details.
Like AutoCAD 2012, AutoCAD 2012 for Mac features the following:
In terms of usability:
-Auto-complete command entry
-Multi-function grips
-Editable UCS Icon. This feature enables users to pick up and drag and snap just like another entity inside the drawing.
-External reference visor
For Documentation:
-Associate array functionality. Described by Maguire as one of the “marquis” features, the array command allows users to grab the object, grab the path and move objects along that path and then change the variable distance.
-Mleader enhancements
-Hatch

Maguire said they focused on the most requested features from their users, however one they were not able to fit in was the sheet set manager, but he said the batch publish feature is included. In addition, AutoCAD 2012 for Mac has layer group features to dynamically drag layers. Plus, with native DWG support users can share AutoCAD files between platforms and leverage data from previous AutoCAD releases.
Unique to the Mac version are the layers palette and quick view. Maguire said they took a more graphical approach to the product in terms of cover flow and also a more visual approach.
AutoCAD WS for Mac
Another important thing Maguire commented on is the connection to the internet with AutoCAD WS where users can upload drawings. AutoCAD WS is a free web and mobile application, introduced last September, that lets users view, edit, and share DWG drawings through a web browser or mobile device, such as the Apple iPad, iPhone, or Google Android.

Shoor gave us the scoop on the intent with AutoCAD WS stating that, “We had one goal of extending AutoCAD to more platforms, devices, locations and users.”
